Abstract

This study examines how historical experience and cultural heritage can contribute to sustainable development in Sudan. It is based on the premise that the weak integration of historical knowledge into development planning has encouraged policies that do not adequately reflect Sudan’s regional and environmental diversity or systematically draw on accumulated local experience in water and land management, production, settlement, and social cooperation. The study employs historical and analytical methods, a comparative approach, case-study analysis, and a review of relevant heritage and development documents. The findings indicate that heritage does not become a development resource merely through the preservation of monuments or symbolic celebrations. Its components must be critically examined, tested for adaptability, and incorporated into contemporary policies under safeguards that ensure equity, participation, and environmental sustainability.
